As you know Washington DC is a large city. I live outside of Philadelphia. Similar area. I don't know of a standard tile job. Questions to ask yourself. Is it a small area you are covering such as a bathroom? Expect the price per square foot to increase. If you are working on your kitchen expect around $6.00 per square foot for just the act of laying the tile. Materials, floor prep and trim will be additional. If you are over a concrete substrate you will have to take up existing flooring materials to get down to the slab. The slab may need to be prepped or patched prior to receiving the thinset for the tile. If your substrate is plywood cement backerboard will need to be installed after existing flooring is removed to avoid height issues. There are ceramic, porcelain, and stone tiles that can be installed. They range in pricing from $1 - $10 per square foot. You will need to include the price for the thinset, grout, and backerboard (if needed). Approximate cost per square foot of tile completely installed in a metro area $11.50 - $25.00 per square foot. Good luck with your flooring project. Jen

The best way of knowing what price is reasonable is to get quotes from 3 or 4 local contractors. That way you can compare prices. Go with the contractor that you feel most comfortable with - not just the one with the cheapest price. Check their references. A great way to get quotes from local contractors is through an Internet based contractor matching service. You might want to try Renovation Experts. Or try the Better Business Bureau. Make sure you have a signed contract with the tile contractor that you go with.
