I live in Washington but work in Idaho. I want to know how the taxes work.

I live in Washington but work in Idaho. I want to know how the taxes work.?
I purchased some large ticket items in Washington (8.6% sales tax) this year and I'd like to deduct them through the sales tax deduction. However, now that I took a job in Idaho, am I going to be better off taking the Idaho state income tax deduction on my Federal return? Am I right in believing that I can't do both?
United States - 2 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
You're correct, you cannot do both. Figure the deduction both ways and take the one that works out best for you.
2 :
Actually, you're going to have to file two state returns this year, your Washington State return, as well as a non-resident Idaho State return because you're earning wages there. So, you need to claim your large purchase in the state that you reside since that's how the tax law works anyway.

How difficult is it to live and work in washington d.c. and have political opinions

How difficult is it to live and work in washington d.c. and have political opinions?
Is it possible to discuss politics at the office if you have a non-political (i.e. non-governmental) job? a political job? (e.g. you work for the government)

People do it all the time. No more problem than any other city. Unless you are working on a government contract and have frequent government visitors.
2 :
You should have asked, "How difficult is it to live and work in Washington DC and NOT have political opinions?" The city is obsessed by politics, and everyone has opinions. What you have to do is be diplomatic about expressing them, unless you work in a purely partisan workplace. In the latter case, you are expected to be fiercely supportive of the prevailing ideology.

Yes but it will be refunded if you file an "out of state resident form" with an Oregon tax return.
2 :
You pay taxes based on your residence. You employer withholds taxes based on where you work. Fine line between the two. Ask you employer they will know for sure.

United States - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Please see an accountant. You may or may not be able to deduct anything for the computer. The apartment is iffy. You cannot deduct "travel" expenses if you accept an assignement that is one year or longer or "indefinite" in nature. Salary and Independent Contractor do not fit in the same sentence. Employees get salaries. Contractors don't.
2 :
1. if yer independent kontrakt, its not salary, its inkum. 2. pull out a 1040 & fill it out. Oenlee thang different from sumwon with regular job is yu need a different form tu memshun weer the munee kum from. 3. evreewon pae same tax, no mater weer yu liv, sept in Nu York sitee yu gotta pae state & sitee inkum tax on top av fed tax.
3 :
The apartment and the computer may have nothing to do with your taxes. If you are single, no dependents, your federal income tax would be around $4200, and your self-employment would be around $6000, so a little over $10K total for the feds, plus whatever DC takes.

You must have been there at an unusual time! I don't think that exposure to D.C. is enough to base immigration on...you need to learn A LOT more about D.C. Anyway, there is no such thing as a general work visa for the U.S. except for some very specialized groups of people...and sorry...Brits are not among them. You CAn sometimes get a work visa tied to a specific job...if you are hired by an American company for a specific job, for a specific period of time. See 2nd site below. Or, you would need to get hired by a British company that would post you in the U.S. Otherwise , you have to immigrate...a loooong and difficult proces. See site below.

It's really not up to him. OPEC determines the price of oil. So you might want to find another "Make Or Break" issue to hang your vote on.

Neither the pres nor Congress have that kind of control over the price of oil.
3 :
i seem to remember pelosi and other dem. members running on"we will lower gas prices!" sooo ummm where you at? pelosi and house dem's?????????
4 :
1. your mother is calling you 2. he has been in Washington for 3 years so someone should know him 3. A presidential candidate has nothing to do with globally traded commodities such as oil 4. you dont know a thing about politics or economics

Gasoline prices are never going down till everyone is so broke the cant buy it. I have a chevy volt ordered and I will try to survive till then Obama wont be able to do didly about oil prices ..unless he says drill everywhere that we dont now...thats not happening either... The only person that can do anything about it is you stop buying gasoline stop buying chinese made junk heat your house with wood pellets or electricity if you use gas or oil grow a garden and feed your neighbors..food is going to get extremly short.
6 :
Do you think campaigning is over?
7 :
Unfortunately, the gas prices does not depend in US Presidents but. he must start to work for better ways to get energy: solar, wind and geocentric to decrees our dependency in foreign oil.
8 :
He's the nominee, not the president. Gas prices are based on supply and demand. Many countries pay a lot more for gas than we do.
9 :
The presidential campaign has just begun. There will be non-stop campaigning until November.
10 :
You people are retarded the president of the US has very little to do with gas prices
11 :
Actually now is the time he has a very close circle of people he has trusted to keep him in the Primary race. The assembling of his "power base" will take months. Some cabinet level appointees [secretary of the .... or Department of Energy, Health and Human Services ... ] don't get in until next year there's too much to do. The full contact "blood sport" with Hilary over . .. . I think? Now the game he must play is more like Chess. One wrong move can have years of bad press and political fallout.

5 :
Democrats rule as the majority in congress right now, that's one of the reasons we are in such a mess.
6 :
Sure they do but the Democrats in control aren't interested in what the minority party thinks. The democrats will play partisan politics to the end..
7 :
they are wrong to pass this bailout and if it doesn't pass my kid's kids will still be paying for it. It's all about getting Obama in the office.

It's a typical Republican tactic... take the credit for the good stuff, but for their mess blame it all on 1) Bill Clinton, 2) The Democrats and 3) Liberals.
9 :
Yes they seem to be . Look at this. They worked hard . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3QBRIsCkGQ0
10 :
Democrats show up to work and blame everything on the Republicans as you saw today. Republicans reworked that bill and Pelosi and Reid have spent their time bashing Republicans and McCain. I know you get the reports in Canada. It's right in front of you to see. Democrats 'work hard' doing nothing but laying blame. In the meantime, Obama can't be bothered to leave his cheering fans or offer more than "it's next Great Depression!" Thanks, Obama, for your input.
11 :
The Republicans are battling amongst themselves. That's why its such a mess. They forget the Republican administration was the genesis for this bill.
12 :
There are enough Democrats in the House of Representatives to Pass any BILL they want to--the problem is--they need political cover for passing a bill that basically spends 700 billion dollars of our money. They don't want the republicans to use it as a political point this election year. Democrats don't have a spine--If it was as truly a disaster-- why did the democrats want to include 20% of the future profits of any government profits to ACORN. ACORN is a big part of why the USA is in this MESS.
13 :
The Republicans haven't had any dominance since 1930 .
14 :
If Pelosi hadn't shot off her fat, ugly mouth the bailout might have passed. That might be a blessing in disguise. If it gets a better financial rescue on the floor, if it gets Pelosi out of the Speaker's chair and if it weakens the Democrat majority it will have worked to everyone's advantage. The Republicans did show up, and they voted down the bailout. That was a good start to getting something better.
15 :
No both parties work in Washington,an don't believe every thing you hear this mess we're in is the fault of the Reps. And for the last 8 years they have been in power an you can blame the war on them too, an our economy. I'm a Dem. an I'm for Obama 08

How much can I expect to pay per Sq Ft. for tile work in Washington DC

How much can I expect to pay per Sq Ft. for tile work in Washington DC?
I am looking to get a standard tile job done in the DC area and I know there is a wide range of per sq ft pricing. How much can I expect to pay?
Decorating & Remodeling - 2 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
As you know Washington DC is a large city. I live outside of Philadelphia. Similar area. I don't know of a standard tile job. Questions to ask yourself. Is it a small area you are covering such as a bathroom? Expect the price per square foot to increase. If you are working on your kitchen expect around $6.00 per square foot for just the act of laying the tile. Materials, floor prep and trim will be additional. If you are over a concrete substrate you will have to take up existing flooring materials to get down to the slab. The slab may need to be prepped or patched prior to receiving the thinset for the tile. If your substrate is plywood cement backerboard will need to be installed after existing flooring is removed to avoid height issues. There are ceramic, porcelain, and stone tiles that can be installed. They range in pricing from $1 - $10 per square foot. You will need to include the price for the thinset, grout, and backerboard (if needed). Approximate cost per square foot of tile completely installed in a metro area $11.50 - $25.00 per square foot. Good luck with your flooring project. Jen
2 :
The best way of knowing what price is reasonable is to get quotes from 3 or 4 local contractors. That way you can compare prices. Go with the contractor that you feel most comfortable with - not just the one with the cheapest price. Check their references. A great way to get quotes from local contractors is through an Internet based contractor matching service. You might want to try Renovation Experts. Or try the Better Business Bureau. Make sure you have a signed contract with the tile contractor that you go with.

What are good cities to find theatre work in

What are good cities to find theatre work in?
I recently received my bachelor's degree in theatre and am in the position to move, just about anywhere...but I'd like to know where there are hubs of theatre where I can find good, paying work. Washington and Texas states are preferred, but I'm open to other suggestions. If you list somewhere, please tell me why/give me actual reasons/theatre names. Don't say Hollywood or Broadway, please, let's be realistic.

Send your resume out to various Theaters in the areas where you want to work. Even Hollywood and Broadway hire occasionally. Seattle has a large theatre community as does Austin and Houston. If you don't get a hit from any of those, try to contact the theatre unions in those towns. Also look into going on the road with a band or show. Just get out there and look, there are all kinds of ways to get a job.
2 :
If you're really looking for theatre, NYC, Chicago & Atlanta are your main hubs - Dallas has a few theatre spots as well. Why not bway? You say "be realistic" but Washington & Texas are clearly "unrealistic" for theatre. Are you a member of a union? That will determine where you'll get the most work. Atlanta is a right to work state, so you don't have to be equity to work there. But if you want to get paid, you need an equity card....that goes for Chi-town and NYC and Dallas. actual reasons - bcuz those are theatre hubs....... theatre names - you should probably do sum research yourself....

Wherever they wish. Prolly on really nice estates too. Just like all the other politicians.

While some GOPers live in DC, they tend to flock to the Commonwealth of Virginia, since they feel safer in "a death penalty state." (I swear, a hard core GOPer once suggested living in VA for this stated reason.) They also prefer VA because it provides for legal discrimination against gays. It should be noted, however, that Northern VA is quite Democratic. The DC 'burbs (Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax, etc.) are the reason Sen. Webb won in '06 and swung the Senate Democratic.

Use the metro. It's pretty safe, and not TOO expensive when you're comparing the exorbitant gas prices.

DEFINITELY the Metro. I live close to DC and the traffic is horrendous!! You do not want to drive anywhere!! Trust me!

Live in the city and walk or take the Metro - driving into the city in the morning is a nightmare!

Living in DC? DC is too expensive if you want to live anywhere nice. Generally the closer to DC the more expensive it is. Virginia is nicer, in my opinion. Commuting? METRO, METRO, METRO! Live and die with your SmarTrip card if you are working near DC. After you learn your route you can just sit back, relax and enjoy the ride. http://www.wmata.com/riding/smartrip.cfm

Does anyone know of a reconstruction dentist that does pro bono work in Washington state?
My boyfriend was in a motorcycle accident almost two years ago which resulted in him knocking out his teeth. He does not have any insurance and we have very little money. He would like very much to have his teeth fixed for many many reasons. If anyone has any resources for this your shared knowledge would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Low cost and free dentistry is possible. Contact your local county dental society for information on dentists who are willing to donate services. (For example: Spokane County Dental Society or Pierce County Dental Society). You may find lower cost dentistry at the University of Washington, but it's not usually free and their is a significant waiting list.

I work in Washington State and my employer will not allow me back to work pending results from a mental health?
. . . Pending results from a mental health professional. I am trying to find out if it is legal for my employer (a private company not involved with national or public safety or security) to require this of me, and what I am entitled to as far as pay is concerned for the lost time this is costing me on the job.

The company has the legal right to require that you show mental stability before allowing you to return to work, although you did not say something must have happened to cause concern in that area and it is your responsibility to provide proof.{}

I'm not positive, you should check with a professional, but I'm pretty sure you'll pay Oregon income tax. I know a lot about the tax system (my grandfather was a CPA), but confirm that with a professional, not me.
2 :
You pay state income tax where you live & either the employee or employer pay state unemployment tax where you work.....so the answer is yes. You will pay Oregon state tax if applicable...
3 :
Yes
4 :
Generally speaking, a person who works in one state and lives in another must report the income to both states, but effectively pays tax only at the tax rate of whichever state has higher taxes. If both states tax the same income, then the person claims a credit on one return for either the tax paid to that state on income also taxed by the other or tax paid to the other state on the income also taxed by the first state whichever is less. To clarify, the credit only applies to tax on income taxed by both states, not to tax on income tax by only one of the states. In the specific case of an Oregon resident with income from Washington state, for 2007, you could claim the credit on your Form 40 Oregon resident return, line 38. For 2007, your credit was the smallest of the following: • Your Washington State 2007 net tax liability. • Your Oregon tax liability after all credits, except the credit for income taxes paid to Washington. • The amount figured using the following formula: Divide your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) taxed by both states [this would be the amount earned in Washington] by your total MAGI. Multiply the result by your Oregon tax after subtracting all other credits. In other words, your MAGI taxed by both states ×Your Oregon tax after subtracting all other credits / Your total MAGI. For 2008, the rules will probably be similar, but the line number might change. Oregon does not tax active duty U.S. military pay earned outside of Orgeon. If this income was reported on your federal tax return, you include it on your Oregon return, but claim a subtraction using code 319. This does not apply to work as a civilian federal employee or to national guard/reserve weekend training.
5 :
Yes. If Washington State had a tax, you would end up filing both Oregon and Washington. ( You would just do NON RESIDENT for the state you did NOT live in.) But since WASHINGTON is a NO STATE INCOME TAX state. You just gotta do OREGON (+ Federal). Oregon taxes you because you live there, use their roads, their housing, their policing, etc etc. And if sometimes it really sucks, I lived in Multnomah county once, and I worked in Vancouver, I had to pay, Federal + Oregon + Multnomah County itax. ( That really sucked, what's next BLOCK TAX? - can you believe a county can make you file & pay taxes too?)

My spouse and I are separating. Because I work in Washington State

My spouse and I are separating. Because I work in Washington State?
I am thinking of renting a home in Washington State, and allowing my spouse and children to continue living in Oregon. Would I owe Oregon Income Tax if this were my living situation?
United States - 5 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Your tax situation depends on where you work, not where you live.
2 :
No, you would owe taxes in the state where you worked. If you and your husband file joint income taxes and Oregon has a state tax, you would have to pay taxes on what your husband earned in Oregon.
3 :
If you live in Washington State the entire year, you will not owe Oregon income tax because you are no longer an Oregon resident. If you move to Washington and live there only part of the year, you will file as a part-year resident of Oregon and owe a proportionate amount of income tax. You need to file a separate return for the above.
4 :
I am assuming you are not a same-sex couple. You owe Oregon taxes on all of your income earned anywhere in the world if you are an Oregon resident. You also owe Oregon taxes on income earned from Oregon sources no matter where you live. If you abandon your Oregon residence completely without intention of returning soon, you won't owe any Oregon taxes unless you work in Oregon, have a business in Oregon, win money from an Oregon casino, etc. Remember that you would still owe Oregon taxes for the period of time before you moved out of Oregon. Keep in mind that Washington is a community property state, but Oregon is a common law state. The fact that you live in Washington means that your spouse will own half of anything you earn while the community still exists under Washington law. This presents a tax problem for your spouse (not you, since Washington doesn't have an income tax). Essentially this means that your spouse will have to pay Oregon income tax on half the money you earn, even though you don't live or work in Oregon. Please refer to the examples on page 19 of Oregon Publication 17 1/2: http://www.oregon.gov/DOR/PERTAX/docs/2009Forms/101-431-09.pdf Under Washington law, the community ends when the marriage becomes "defunct." You should consult with your divorce attorney about how this applies to your marriage. I would suggest that your spouse work with a qualified tax practitioner to file their taxes as the issues of community property are difficult for most people to understand. As for you, if you choose to file a separate federal return, you are also going to have to deal with community property issues. You may also wish to consult with a qualified tax practitioner. And some non-tax advice: If there is the possibility of a divorce or legal separation in your future, consult with a divorce attorney before making the decision to move to Washington. Your move could have a major impact on your property rights in the event of a divorce.
5 :
if you are working in Wash for more than a temporary assignment, one that is likely to be permanent, you will file your tax home as Wash. not sure I understand your meaning of separation--is this something that will be permanent? if you have moved as of June 30 for the remainder of the year, without a single overnite, you can file as single-- the spouse also single and if the children reside with the spouse, head of household but the June 30-Dec. 31, time line is critical, not a single overnite during that time

Probably because he's not on the committee to work on this whole Wall Street mess. The folks who are on that comittee almost have it worked out, they don't want some Johnny-come-lately swooping in with his pen and saying, "lemme just add this here and take away that there..." It alomst seems like McCain is baiting Obama to contribute to the legislation, then if it doesn't work our right, he'll point the finger and say "See - Obama's name is on that. he doesn't know what's best". Neither of them think the current plan is the best solution.

Yes. If you're asked to do something at work, you're supposed to do it. If you don't want to, find a different job.
3 :
In almost every state, unless you have a (union) contract to the contrary, you can be fired for no reason at all, let alone refusing to do what you're told, to the best of your ability.
4 :
Yes. Someone has to clean it up. You are a prima donna. Expect many more firings.
5 :
There is no such thing as a 'just' reason to be fired. They can fire you for no reason at all, refusing to do your job is actually a very good reason. There is no law that bars minors from cleaning urine. Do you think you are too good for the job, but it's okay for others to have to do it? How's that working for you?
6 :
FLSA (federal labor laws) prohibit dangerous jobs for minors. That is not dangerous, otherwise you could not have babysitters. So yes, you disobeyed a direct order.

I'm in the same situation as you! Coyote Central offers a Hit the Streets program, but the deadline has closed-- you can try next year. Camp Fire USA's Youth Volunteer Corps has a program where you can earn a post-high school savings account of $500 for each 100 hours of service you do under their program. Hope this helps! King County also has a resource website for volunteers. See if your friends parents can offer you a job! And you can always sell stuff (garage sale, make jewelry, etc.) If you're the artsy kind like me, people are always looking for art to display. And yes, you do get paid :)

If I live in Washington and work in Oregon am I better off contributing to my Traditional IRA instead of Roth

If I live in Washington and work in Oregon am I better off contributing to my Traditional IRA instead of Roth?
Does Oregon tax the income I contribute to my traditional IRA? Will Oregon be able to tax IRA distributions once I retire and live in Washington? I have always worked in Washington until recently so it always made sense to contribute to my Roth, but now that I am paying Oregon income tax, I wonder if it might be smart to contribute to the traditional if that state defers taxes on traditional contributions and will not be able to tax distributions once I quit working there.
United States - 2 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Does Oregon tax the income I contribute to my traditional IRA? If all of your income is from your job in Oregon, you will get the full deduction for your traditional IRA. If you have income from outside of Oregon, you get a pro-rated deduction. Will Oregon be able to tax IRA distributions once I retire and live in Washington? No. Once you are no longer a wage earner in OR, you will not owe OR income tax on your retirement income. I assume you have no business income in OR. If you have a traditional deductible IRA, both your federal and OR income taxes will be reduced in the year of contribution. If you have a Roth IRA, you will pay federal and OR income taxes in the year of contribution. If the OR tax on your Roth IRA is significant to you, you can change over (in full or part) to a traditional IRA to reduce OR taxes in the year of contribution. I don't understand your logic in that from a WA resident perspective, a Roth IRA is better for you. You will pay no state income tax on your distributions from either a traditional IRA or a Roth IRA. Since you have no state income tax, your decision should be based on your federal income taxes, plus RMD requirements for a traditional IRA.
2 :
the point is, your tax home is where you work and if this is not a temporary, short term job in Oregon, you will file Oregon tax returns if you contribute to a reg IRA the amount causes a reduction in your taxable income, no matter where you file because most states take the figures from your 1040 to enter on the state and the IRA contribution is already figured in a Roth is not a tax advantage when you contribute or when you take distribution in any state

According to the law, "For 16- and 17-year-old workers only, six-hour shifts and up to 28 hours per week are available through a special variance from the school district." "With a special variance, a 16- or 17-year-old teen can work up to 6 hours in a day, with a maximum of 28 hours during a school week in non-agricultural jobs if the school, business, parents, and teens agree that the extra work hours would not be detrimental to the teen's well-being, school attendance or academic performance. The special variance does not require approval from Labor and Industries. A special variance must include signatures of approval from the parent, teen, business, and the school. The special variance is included on page 2 of the regular Parent/School Authorization form. "

It really help me alot. Any hotel near a metro is fine. I stayed in Georgetown area it was real nice. The Vietnam wall and the Lincoln Memorial, Korean War, Nurses memorial, Washinton Momument , World War II Memorial. We walked to everything once we got off he Metro. Parking is alwful and you have to pay like$10 to $20 a day to park you car in Washington. It cheaper to go to an outside area as long as you stay then at your hotels there yo usually park free. We stayed 8 days in the fall and had a wonderful time.

They should. Since you're an Oregon resident, you have to file as an Oregan resident. You're going to pay it one way or another. You pay exactly the same amount no matter what they do. The only way your return would be higher is if they charge you penalties for not having it withheld or paying it on time. (The guy below me is wrong. Washington state has NO INCOME TAX. You probably knew that. He might be from New York.)
2 :
Oh Joy, you get to file two state income tax returns. After you do your federal, you do your washington income. Then you write a check, or get a refund. Then you have to do your Orogon return. But they give you full credit for the taxes you paid in Washington. But wait, there is more. The state taxes that were with held for 2009, you can claim on your federal 2009 return. But when you write a check, you have to claim that on your 2010 return. As for me, I have to file taxes in Colorado, New Mexico and Missouri. It could be worse. Senator Al Franklin had to file tax returns in almost 50 states. Then he filed for a big refund from Minnesota. And this is a guy who writes jokes for a living.
3 :
Mark M is wrong. You cannot "file two state income tax returns" because only one of these two states has state income tax returns. You must file a federal (IRS) tax return and an Oregon tax return. You must pay Oregon taxes. If they do not withhold from your pay, then you should make estimated tax payments to Oregon four times each year. You should not wait until you file.
4 :
Yes you are going to have to take Taxes out for Oregon just head over to there City Building and they will guide you along the way to getting this goal accomplished correctly..

If your W-2 shows California taxes were taken out, yes. I used to live in Washington... my ex worked part of the year in Oregon and he had Oregon State taxes withheld from his paychecks on the money he earned in Oregon/not the money he earned in WA. We had to file in OR on the money we earned in OR. My current husband worked 5 months in LA and was paid out of the State of WA. We did not earn income in LA/we did not get paid from a LA source therefore didn't have any income to report to them/no income was reported being earned in LA. It gets a little complicated from here on... but pay special attention to how any Per-Diem was reported. I won't get into that since that was not what your question was asking.
